U.S. to Target New Ag Trade Markets in 2025

The U.S. Secretary of Agriculture says protecting trade relationships is one of her biggest priorities.
Brooke Rollins says USDA will target new markets in 2025. “I hope to begin making trade trips very soon across the world. I’ve already begun conversations with several potential key significant trading partners that I think will make a huge difference to our farmers and ranchers back home.”
Speaking to reporters recently at the 2025 Commodity Classic in Denver, Colorado, she said many farmers have expressed concerns about the potential impact tariffs could have on ag exports. “Obviously that is my role to take that to President Trump and to the team, that is negotiating, that is working on those deals to ensure that those concerns are heard effectively and that we have a plan in place to make sure that our farm community is not compromised more.”
Rollins says she expects some tense trade negotiations over the next few months, but adds it will benefit producers in the long run.
EDITOR’S TAKE:
Yes, farmers are concerned, like many others, about tariffs. The trade war with China during the first Trump administration placed farmers in the crosshairs of the dispute. Fortunately, the money from tariffs was utilized to support farmers/ranchers through government payments. The net result – farmers/ranchers had the highest net farm income in history. Will history repeat? It’s too early to know. One thing is clear, however, opening new markets should be a priority. The focus on expanding market access and adding new trading partners will have positive long-term implications. Be sure to keep farmers/ranchers at the top of your customer prospect list.
