Russians Target Ukraine’s Food Supplies

The crisis in Ukraine continues as farmers prepare to plant crops this spring. And now there are reports planted acres in the country could fall by half this spring as Russia is accused of deliberately targeting Ukrainian agriculture.

The European Commission has accused Russia of targeting agriculture in Ukraine to spur a food shortage and cause widespread famine in the state.

Ukraine's Ag Minister Roman Lshchenko said planted acres could be cut in half due to the war. He said farmers in Ukraine may only be able to plant about 7 million hectares this year compared to 15 million last year before the Russian invasion.

Winter wheat, which is already in the ground, is looking at a reduction, as well. Lshchenko stated farmers planted 6.5 million hectares of winter wheat, but the harvested area may only be around 4 million.

Lshchenko recently resigned citing health reasons. The news came just over a month after Russia invaded Ukraine.

Assuming the reports are true and accurate, the results could be devastating for the Ukranian people as well as consumers in other nations who depend on their exports. Not only will food be in short supply, but the prices will go up dramatically. Prices are already much higher due to inflationary pressures which began prior to Russia’s invasion of the Ukraine. We can only hope the conflict ends in time for more acreage to be planted this year. Otherwise, it will require a great deal of humanitarian aid to fill the huge demand left in the wake of this unnecessary war!
