New NCGA Study Shows How Much the Corn Crop Adds to U.S. Economy

The National Corn Growers Association (NCGA) recently released a study highlighting the economic contribution of corn farming in the United States.

The study showed America's corn growers produced the largest crop in history in 2025, dwarfing the previous record. Over the year, corn growers produced 17.02 billion bushels, grown on 98.8 million acres and valued at $70.1 billion.

"This is a testament to the magnitude of the U.S. corn industry, but the 'ripple effects' of the sector extend even further," said NCGA Economist Gretchen Kuck, who authored the study. "The nation's corn growers drive economic activity far beyond their farms, supporting local communities and boosting the broader U.S. economic engine."

The report noted that corn production impacts the economies of all 50 states and extends across more than 500 different industries, generating an estimated $142 billion in total economic output, contributing $56 billion to the U.S. GDP, and supporting more than 482,000 jobs, bringing home $32 billion in wages in 2025.

"Put a simpler way, every bushel of corn produced in the United States in 2025 contributed an associated $8.34 in economic activity to the broader U.S. economy," Kuck noted.

The study points to the major contributions of corn growers as these farmers face mounting input costs and low corn prices.

EDITOR’S TAKE:

Studies of this nature are very useful when educating the general public and policymakers about the importance of a particular industry. I always find it fascinating just how much direct and indirect (ripple effect) impact is attributed to a commodity, such as corn in this case. It helps us put into perspective how many people’s lives are impacted by an ear of corn! It also underscores the simple fact that agriculture, while less than 2% of our population, affects the lives of every single person in some manner. Because that 2% supplies us with food, fuel, etc., it frees up the other 98% of us to pursue our dreams and live our lives without the stress and concern for supplying our own food every day!

Be sure to celebrate the farmers/ranchers in your area. Whether it is through a special event just for them or perhaps a community wide effort, such as National Ag Day, make sure you continue to support agriculture as often as possible. Farmers/ranchers do notice….
