As expected, sales of smaller tractors of 100 HP or less were down for the first month of the year. However, sales of 4WD tractors were only down 2.2%, due in large part to lack of availability. Sales of 100+HP tractors, on the other hand, which are more readily available, were up 22.8% compared to a year ago. And, wait for it - sales of combines (big ticket item) were up an astounding 132.7% compared to a year earlier and year-to-date. EDITOR’S TAKE: Once again this report says a great deal about the state of our general economy and the contrasting condition in the agricultural economy. Sales of smaller tractors, those under 100 HP, used primarily by hobby farms and large property owners, were down significantly. This is largely attributed to rising inflation and a decline in the stock market. Contrast that with sales of larger HP tractors and combines that were up rather convincingly overall – and the evidence is clear. Farmers/ranchers are facing huge tax burdens and are looking to invest in their operation and lower that payment to Uncle Sam. The other item they are very interested in purchasing, according to Farm Journal research, is trucks! They will purchase well over a million of them this year alone.
