Importance of Investing Checkoff Dollars in Growing Demand

Growing export markets matter for U.S. beef and pork producers.

Missouri pork producer and National Pork Board member Jesse Heimer says export markets are crucial for pork producers.

“In a domestic market that’s very challenging, it’s important to have these international outlets for pork.”

Currently more than 30 percent of U.S. pork is exported. He states, “Japan isn’t like other trading partners. They want our highest quality product and you can’t always find somebody that’s more worried about quality than price. That’s important here.”

Iowa cattle producer and Cattlemen’s Beef Board member Ross Havens says investing checkoff dollars to grow demand adds to producer profitability. “We just completed a study which shows that the beef checkoff is returning about $450/head by being able to leverage the money against our $1 checkoff investment.”

Heimer and Havens were recently in Japan with the U.S. Meat Export Federation.  Heimer says one of the things he was most excited to share about his experience is the work that’s being done in our country to ensure that the strong demand for U.S. pork and beef continues.
