Agriculture Under Attack
A Washington, D.C.-based public relations expert says agriculture in America is under a well-funded attack.
Jack Hubbard, owner of Berman and Company, says groups like HSUS (Humane Society of the U.S.) and ASPCA (American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals) have a singular mission.
“They wake up every single morning and they want to put people in agriculture out of business.” He says, “They want this to be the last generation. That the farm doesn’t get passed down in the next because they have a moral objection to what folks are doing.”
“The HSUS, according to their tax returns, give 1% of their budget to local pet shelters.” He says, “The ASPCA. You see their ads. They raised over $300 million last year and they run one pet shelter.”
Hubbard says the funds are primarily used to sway public opinion and fund lobbying efforts on both sides of the aisle at state and federal levels of government.
EDITOR’S TAKE:
Well organized attacks on agriculture are not new. In fact, many celebrities and disgruntled activists have led campaigns dating back to the early 1970’s. Whether the issue is animal rights, environmental safety, public health matters, you name it, you’re likely to find a path littered with attacks on this vital industry. I find it difficult to imagine why such attacks are even viable, but I will be the first to admit my bias. Growing up on a farm and having been involved with many phases of agriculture over the decades, I know how dedicated farmers/ranchers are to providing the safest, most sustainable and affordable food anywhere in the world. After all, farmers/ranchers depend on the land they farm and the animals they raise for their very livelihood. Be sure, as we approach the Thanksgiving holiday, to thank the farmers/ranchers in your area for what they do. They will appreciate your kind words and support – especially when they are under attack….
