Sheep Industry Files for Unfair Trade Investigation

Sheep producers are rallying behind a federal investigation into whether rising lamb imports have seriously harmed the U.S. sheep industry. The U.S. International Trade Commission launched the safeguard investigation in July at the request of the Office of the U.S. Trade Representative after a petition from the American Sheep Industry Association. The inquiry will determine whether imported fresh, chilled and frozen lamb has caused or threatens serious injury to domestic producers, potentially leading to temporary trade measures, such as tariffs or quotas.

We don’t often hear much about the sheep industry in the U.S. simply because it operates in the background compared with beef, pork and poultry. In this instance, where they are filing for the USTR to conduct an investigation into unfair trade practices, it becomes a serious international issue that deserves some attention. If other nations are engaged in unfair trade practices, our domestic producers will be entitled to some form of protection or safeguards going forward.
