Hemp-Based Batteries?

Wisconsin Battery Company recently announced the acquisition of 17 acres in Portage, Wisconsin, where it will build a new manufacturing plant to develop hemp carbon batteries as an alternative for lithium-ion batteries. The company focuses on research, development and manufacturing of clean, renewable energy storage alternatives.

A recent report from the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel said the company aims to start production of batteries (for hearing aids) in 2025 and eventually ramp up to electric vehicle batteries.

The company said these hemp carbon batteries will offer improved energy density, longer lifespan, reduced environmental impact and utilize domestically produced raw material, thus addressing the national security risks associated with global lithium sourcing. The plant will also focus on developing industrial batteries that enhance the efficiency and reliability of solar and wind power systems and maximize efficiency of connections to the grid.

EDITOR’S TAKE:

Very interesting. I assume they are using industrial hemp as the base for these batteries. Using the other kind could lead to some legal and regulatory blockades. Industrial hemp was used in WWII for a variety of applications, such as rope and clothing, etc. Hence, it’s not surprising to see it being used for additional battery storage capacity in modern times. Once again, this could easily lead to expanded production and markets for industrial hemp. When that happens, farmers and ranchers benefit. Replacing lithium-ion batteries would be good for the environment as well. By the way, you might consider running a special on batteries in your parts and service departments. After a long hard winter and in anticipation of spring season, farmers/ranchers are likely needing to replace a few batteries in their operations. Just food for thought….
