Deloitte Study Finds Only 10% of Americans Want Electric Vehicles – 69% Prefer Gas/Diesel

Joe Biden has some work to do if he's going to sell Americans on switching to electric vehicles (EV), a key aspect of his climate policy.

According to a new survey from the consulting firm Deloitte, 69% of American consumers prefer that their next vehicle be gas or diesel. Some 17% want a hybrid car. Only 10% favor either a plug-in hybrid or battery EV. To view the study click here.

By the way: The House Ag Committee has announced a hearing on the implications of EV investments for agriculture and rural America.

EDITOR’S TAKE:

Pretty overwhelming support for gas/diesel vehicles according to this new study. The top five concerns as expressed in the Deloitte research were: 1) Driving range (or lack thereof); 2) Lack of infrastructure; 3) Cost/price premium; 4) Recharge time; 5) Safety of battery technology. In addition, there is a great deal of additional research that addresses the hidden/embedded costs of producing the electricity to keep them charged as well as the environmental costs of disposing of batteries, etc. It’s obvious that technology will address some of the major concerns, but it is clear that for the time being consumers, by-and-large, aren’t convinced EV’s are their first choice. What will farmers think when they are faced with a choice of new ag equipment that is electric powered – we’ll just have to wait and see!
