China Making Progress on U.S. Soybean Purchases

The chairman of the U.S. House Ways and Means Committee says China is making progress on its purchase commitments of U.S. soybeans.

Jason Smith, a U.S. Congressman from Missouri, tells Brownfield Ag News, “They’ve already purchased over 13 million metric tons, so they’re halfway there. They got more work to do, but last year they purchased a big fat zero and so, we’re definitely moving in the right direction.”

Smith credits tariffs for creating the leverage to open foreign markets. “If we allow our farmers to compete on a level playing field, no one can beat us.”

EDITOR’S TAKE:

It is good to hear an optimistic assessment of soy sales to China. Congressman Smith is also a farmer and therefore has a direct interest in what is happening in the soybean market. All well and good but, as he pointed out, China has not been the most reliable customer, even when we have a signed agreement. Yes, what we have sold is definitely better than zero, but will they live up to their agreement for 2026 – we’ll see?
