In a vote this past Sunday, John Deere workers with the International Union, United Automobile, Aerospace and Agricultural Implement Workers of America (UAW) rejected a six-year contract that would have impacted pay and benefits for more than 10,000 employees of the agricultural machinery manufacturer. The vote again set the stage for a strike, as a tentative agreement that was reached on October 1 expired at midnight Wednesday and picketing is now underway.
Watch this short video report to learn more about what happened and where the negotiations stand.
EDITOR’S TAKE:
It is unfortunate the two sides have not yet reached an agreement. As we stated in a prior edition of the AIR when reporting on this matter – harvest is a critical time for farmers. A strike could cause a disruption in product and parts needed to keep harvest moving forward smoothly. We are hopeful that the parties can quickly come to an agreement and everyone will be singing Kumbaya!
