Ag Awaits Supreme Court Opinion on Trump Tariffs
The U.S. Supreme Court still has not issued a decision on President Trump’s use of tariffs and an ag lobbyist says he’s eager to see the opinion.
Randy Russell with the Russell Group says if the court upholds the authority, tariffs will continue, but if the court strikes it down “I think you’ll see the administration use other trade authorities to invoke tariffs. It may be a little more clumsy or laborious and time consuming, but I would not anticipate, even if the court strikes down the tariffs, some huge change out of the chute on tariffs.”
Russell tells Brownfield the court’s ruling directly affects U.S. tariff policy, which has a ripple effect on trade, ag and the economy.
The agriculture industry has been expecting a ruling from SCOTUS for weeks and Russell says the delay feels long, because of the decision’s importance and political weight.
EDITOR’S TAKE:
Mr. Russell and I have been acquainted for many, many years and I respect his opinion. He is a Washington insider when it comes to agricultural issues. Although he did not speculate about how he felt the court would rule, he did suggest that the administration would have a work around. I agree with his assessment. Unfortunately, we won’t know all the details and potential implications until the Supreme Court issues its opinion.
As we wait for the court to act, perhaps it is time to explore the new AGwagon and put one on your lot, if you have not done so already. The AGwagon is amazing!
